Uma Shah: Professional Portfolio
About Me
I am a currently a student at Loughborough University studying Textile: Innovation and Design, specialising in Integrated Digital Practice. I am very passionate about using Photoshop and Illustrator within my designs to create interesting compositions.
Growing up in London I enjoy using the surroundings as inspiration for my designs such as the geometric shapes seen in buildings but also the natural aspects of the parks.
I usually take influence from my upbringing and culture as well as I feel that this is a big part of my life and am heavily shaped by this in my daily life.
Projects
Time and Influence
This was a collaborative project with Tate Britain, Central Saint Martins and other young designers. I designed and created a garment for this catwalk which was then showcased at the Tate Britain. The theme was Time and Influence and we had to take inspiration from the hundreds of years of paintings around the Tate for our prints and garment designs. (Design seen on right hand side)
Textured Tropicals
For this project my main focus was tropical plants and flowers. I particularly looked at the surface pattern of leaves and tried to incorporate these into my designs. I used a combination of digital embroidery, digital print and jacquard weaving to create my final designs.
Born In Kenya
In this project I took inspiration from my family heritage as my parents and grandparents were born and raised in Kenya. I had the pleasure of visiting their hometown Nairobi as well as visiting Maasai Mara where I not only got to go on a safari but also got to meet the tribes people that live there. This trip greatly inspired my final collection. I experimented with a range of materials and techniques throughout the project to make a contemporary fashion collection.
